Project Description
Project | Villawood Detention Centre |
Commissioning client | Hansen Yuncken |
Location | Villawood, NSW |
Date of completion | 2014 |
The Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, located around 27 kilometres out of Sydney, first opened its doors in 1976. The facility has recently undergone a major upgrade that included the improvement of processing areas, visitor meeting spaces and detainee amenities.
The Federally funded project’s final designs incorporated input from stakeholders including staff, local residents, visitors and people held in detention. The overall goal of the project was to improve the look of the facility for the local community as well as the people detained within, while also preserving and restoring the heritage buildings on site.
As part of this major, multimillion dollar project, Interior Works was brought in to complete the interior fit-out of ten separate accommodation buildings. Working with high security ceilings and external cladding systems, the project took into account the high security requirements of the site.
